It’s interesting to learn of how The Old Grammar School came to be Middleton’s most graceful wedding venue, so here is a brief overview. In 1412, Thomas Langley’s Parish school was built on the land; it was later replaced by the ‘Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School’ in 1586 – this is where our name originates. This church school gave a ‘free and perpetual’ education to those in the Parish of Middleton, and it granted letters of patent by Queen Elizabeth I herself.
When the school closed in 1909, the building was then used for a number of charitable purposes. A Church Army Sister or Captain would staff Sunday school sessions, mission services and outreach. Later, the Middleton Operatic and Dramatic Society used the premises during the 1960s.
The National Heritage Lottery Board and English Heritage decided to fund the refurbishment of the building in 1997, which is how you see it today. The wonderful standard it has been brought to is what makes it so appealing as a wedding and events venue to you and many others looking for a unique and quaint space.
